RUBBINGS

I first developed my transfer rubbing technique in January, 2009. In this process, I begin by selecting and editing photographs or public domain images. I then print these images (inverted) onto clear plastic and, while the ink is still wet, carefully drop the plastic sheet onto paper surfaces and rub the backside to transfer the ink. This is done multiple times to build up the density of the ink and strengthen the image. Accuracy in placement (or registration) for successive rubbings is critical. The repeated rubbings and gentle spreading of the ink creates an fuzziness unique to the process. The finished one of a kind works can contain a singular image, or they may be more complex, involving the overlaying successive rubbing images or text.
