Ken NaHan - The Portal Series

For many years, my work has explored movement, transformation, and the interplay between structure and improvisation. Working on handmade paper, altered maps, nautical charts, and other found materials, I create compositions that balance intention with chance. Repeated motifs, layered surfaces, and rhythmic lines often evoke the experience of music, inviting viewers into spaces that feel both familiar and unknown.

The Portal series extends these interests through a more focused visual language. At the center of each work is a circular form that functions as both image and idea. More than a shape, it serves as a threshold—a point of passage between different ways of seeing.

The portal may be understood as a window, a lens, or a metaphor for consciousness itself. It invites a shift in perspective, encouraging viewers to look beyond habitual ways of seeing and consider a broader relationship to the world around them.

Maps have long played an important role in my work, not as geographic descriptions but as records of movement, memory, and thought. Through layers of sanding, collage, paint, ink, and drawing, each work becomes a record of transformation. Ultimately, the Portal series is an invitation to pause, look more carefully, and remain open to the possibility that there is always more than one way to understand what lies before us.
